Rig types & build guide

Eight kinds of rig, what a build on each usually includes, and how to read the figures on a listing.

Written by the shop. A listing's build sheet is the record for that rig.

Motorised

Rigs

A rig carries its own engine and its own build. Its listing shows mileage, drivetrain and fuel after the three figures every listing shares.

Usually fitted is what a build of this type typically carries, not a specification. Each listing's build sheet shows what is fitted to that rig.

Motorised

Built Pickup

A pickup with the build fitted to the truck: suspension, armour and power on the chassis, and a roof tent or camper on the bed. When camp is packed away it is still a pickup.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension Coil-over lift or a heavy-duty leaf pack, with remote-reservoir shocks
  • 02 Armour Steel front bumper, engine skid plate and rock sliders
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery, DC-DC charger and a solar panel
  • 04 Sleeping A roof tent over the bed, or a camper cabin

Motorised

Built SUV

An SUV with the build carried inside the body and on the roof. The power system usually sits in the cargo area and the sleeping on top or behind the seats.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension Coil-over lift or a long-travel kit
  • 02 Armour Steel front bumper, skid plates and rock sliders
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery and a dual-battery isolator
  • 04 Sleeping A roof tent or an interior sleeping platform

Motorised

Expedition Van

A van with the living space built inside the body, behind the cab. The layout drawing on each listing shows how the interior is laid out.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension Coil-over lift or air suspension
  • 02 Armour Steel front bumper and an engine skid plate
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery, solar panel and inverter
  • 04 Sleeping A pop-top roof or an interior sleeping platform

Motorised

Expedition Truck

A truck chassis carrying a separate camper box behind the cab. The box holds the sleeping, power and water systems, and the layout drawing shows its plan.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension Heavy-duty leaf pack or air suspension
  • 02 Armour Steel front bumper and an engine skid plate
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery, solar panel and inverter
  • 04 Sleeping A camper cabin

Base Vehicle

An unbuilt vehicle, listed as the starting point for a build. Nothing in the four groups is fitted; the shop can quote a build.

  • 02 Armour Not fitted
  • 03 Power Not fitted

Slide-in and towed

Campers & trailers

A camper or trailer is listed on its own. Its figures are the unit's, not those of the vehicle that carries or tows it.

Usually fitted is what a build of this type typically carries, not a specification. Each listing's build sheet shows what is fitted to that unit.

Slide-in

Truck Camper

A camper unit that slides into a pickup bed and lifts off again. It is listed on its own, and the pickup it rides on is not part of the listing.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension On the truck, not the camper
  • 02 Armour Not usually fitted
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery and a solar panel on the camper
  • 04 Sleeping A camper cabin, sometimes with a pop-top roof

Towed

Off-Road Trailer

A towed camp on its own axle: sleeping, power, water and storage on a trailer chassis. Its listing shows axle, coupler and length in place of mileage.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension Trailer suspension, with wheels and tyres often matched to the tow vehicle
  • 02 Armour Not usually fitted
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery, DC-DC charger and a solar panel
  • 04 Sleeping A hard-shell or soft-shell roof tent on the trailer's rack

Towed

Teardrop / Squaredrop

A compact trailer with a sleeping cabin in the body and a galley under the rear hatch. Teardrop and squaredrop are the two body shapes.

Browse by type

Usually fitted

  • 01 Suspension A suspension upgrade on some builds
  • 02 Armour Not usually fitted
  • 03 Power Lithium house battery and a solar panel
  • 04 Sleeping A sleeping cabin in the body

Reading the figures

What a listing tells you

Three figures lead every card — Sleeps, Clearance and Weight — whether the listing is a rig, a camper or a trailer. What follows them depends on the kind.

Build guide

The four build groups

Shop parts by group

Every build on this site is recorded in the same four groups. They light on each card, filter the inventory, and make up the build sheet on every listing.

01 Suspension

How the vehicle sits and moves: lift, shocks, springs, and the wheels and tyres sized to them.

Read it with the Clearance figure on the same listing.

Recorded as

02 Armour

Steel bolted to the chassis and body: bumpers, skid plates, sliders and racks.

Read it with the Weight figure on the same listing.

Recorded as

03 Power

The house electrical system: battery, charging, solar, inverter and the circuits that run a fridge.

Read it with the Battery figure, in amp-hours.

Recorded as

04 Sleeping

Where you sleep and what covers you: roof tents, camper cabins, pop-top roofs, platforms, awnings and heaters.

Read it with the Sleeps figure and, where there is one, the layout drawing.

Each term opens the listings that carry it.
